What is JCM ?
Joint
Crediting Mechanism (JCM) is cooperation between Government of
Indonesia and Government of Japan, which encourages Japanese private
organizations to invest in low carbon development activities in
Indonesia through incentives.
It also intends to facilitate discussion between Indonesia and Japan on
low carbon development and to evaluate activities on reducing GHG
emission reductions by developing and applying MRV methodologies. JCM
must also provide further benefits for Indonesia such as promoting,
technology transfer, capacity building and employment, while conducting
practices that promote sustainable development and ensure environmental
integrity.
How far is it being developed in Indonesia ?
By
end of 2013, there are 57 feasibility studies have been undertaken, 13
feasibility studies are ongoing and 8 projects are to be implemented as
demonstration projects. Outcomes of these studies and demonstration
projects are expected to contribute to knowledge improvement and
experiences that are essentially required in designing framework and
scheme of a new mechanism.
The signing of JCM agreement between the Government of Indonesia and the
Government of Japan on 26 August 2013 is a significant milestone in
Indonesia-Japan cooperation in carbon trading and GHG emissions
reduction between countries.
The
specific projects such as energy efficiency, new and renewable energy,
low rank coal utilization and waste to energy utilization have been
started to be implemented and funded by this JCM mechanism.
Major Japanese companies such as Marubeni, Sojitz, Mitsubishi, Toshiba,
Shimizu, and others have been involved on this initiative funded
projects. Some of them have been progressing to a further
implementation.
