DEVELOPING CREATIVE MATERIALS FOR EARLY YEARS TEACHING
Shadow puppetry is used as a tool for early years learning in
countries such Canada and Japan. Currently shadow puppetry is also used in
Indonesia. This tool acts as medium to nurture creativity in early years. There
are many ways to use shadow puppetry in classroom learning such as to teach
Alphabet, Math, Values and Characters Building. This workshop will explore the
usage of shadow puppetry in classroom teaching and learning. They will also
develop their own idea of how to get more creative with their own teaching
practice.
In this two-day of workshop, the participants will be able to:

Understand the potential uses of Shadow Puppetry in Early Years Education

Integrate story telling through shadow puppetry
3
Develop ideas and alternatives using Shadow Puppetry in the context of the each
of the teacher classrooms.

Perform activities or a lesson using shadow puppetry
Speakers:
Susan Allen
Susan completed two years of her PhD in Holistic Education at
the University of Toronto. She has over 17 years experience integrating arts
and movement in teaching learning in various contexts and organizations. Her
work in Indonesia started in the 90’s when she worked with street children and
involved in the environmental curriculum based project in Cirebon. She has
worked in Bali at the Green school and Pelangi schools. She taught performing
arts curriculum include improvisation, physical theater, storytelling, shadow
play, wayang golek and many others subject related to arts. She has written and
performed in over 20 plays designed for shadow puppetry and other puppet forms.
She is now life in Bali and form Yellow Coco creative arts centre, a community
based arts centre in Nyuh Kuning, Ubud, Bali
Susiawan
Susiawan graduated from ITB Bandung. He was co-founder of
Yayasan Anak Merdeka in Bandung and pioneered the approach of how to use the
arts as a tool in teaching and learning in kampung communities. He lived in
Canada for 12 years where he founded, Me and my Shadows teaching arts based
activities in schools, museums and cultural centres in Canada. He is the
founder of Yellow Coco creative nest, a community based arts in Nyuh Kuning,
Ubud, Bali. Yellow Coco is designed to use arts as a tool in bridging the expat
community with the local community through the arts-based program. This model
emerged after years of his experience working in schools and communities. He
has worked with many children in different settings.
